How Repeaters Can Dramatically Extend Your Communication Range


When most people purchase their first GMRS or Amateur (HAM) radio, they expect to communicate only as far as the radio's power allows. In reality, one of the most powerful tools available to radio operators isn't a more expensive radio—it's a radio repeater.


A repeater can turn a 2–5 mile handheld radio into a communication tool capable of reaching 20, 40, or even 100+ miles depending on terrain, antenna height, and repeater location.

What Is a Radio Repeater?


A repeater is a radio station installed at a high elevation—such as a mountain, tall building, communications tower, or water tower—that receives your radio transmission and immediately retransmits it at higher power.


Think of it as a relay station.
